Achy knees after Squats?

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

Are squats leaving you with achy knees?

As a Personal Trainer, I am often asked how to stop the knees from aching when performing squats.

Let me help you fix it!

First I would usually assess my clients movement and check out how they are moving when they sit down into the squat and I look at how they drive their weight back up to standing position.

First thing to look out for is if you are squatting with your knees, squats performed this way look like a squat but instead of using your bum to sit down in a backwards motion, you are using your knees and driving your weight into a forward motion.

If you see that you drive forwards rather than back - take a little look at this and try these tips:

If you drive your weight backwards but still experience achy knees - get in front of a mirror or ask someone to see what your knees are doing when you squat. If you notice your knees do a little wobble, you can fix it by following these steps in this video, focus on driving your weight into the outside of your anchor points, when you do this , it takes the drive out of the knees and into the bum - which is where you want it!

It is important that you give your exercises the focus they deserve. It is easy to for your mind to wander when you have a whole set to get through or you are up against the clock but it is always better to have a great execution for 3 good reasons!

1 - you will actually be working the areas that you are supposed to be using.

2 - you are way less likely to get an injury

3 - you will get results quicker!

Thank you for reading/watching. Please take these tips into your next squatting session and tell me how much of a difference it made to the quality of your squats and your achy knees!
